Colon Cleansing

by Rich Maloof for MSN Health & Fitness

Colon cleansers such as enemas, colonics and herbal solutions attempt to induce a process that nature has already figured out.

Reality%20Check

A healthy GI tract manages very well on its own, thank you.

Like the small intestine, the colon is an active organ that moves food through with an undulating motion called peristalsis. In the course of healthy digestion there’s a normal emptying time for each segment of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, allowing nutrients and salts to be absorbed or moved along.

“It’s very elegant neuropathology,” says Dr. Deborah Nagle, chief of colorectal surgery at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. “The colon is regulated by your nervous system and by some hormones that allow for active peristalsis through your intestine. Some people seem to think there’s a benefit to artificially inducing this process with colonic irrigation or colonic cleansing, but there’s just no known medical benefit to it.”

Reality%20Check
The primary medical use of colon cleansing is to prepare for gastrointestinal screenings.

Enemas can be purchased over the counter for patients to use on their own, whereas colonic irrigation methods (colonics or high colonics) are administered with a tube by a qualified professional. Both send water-based solutions—sometimes including saline, baking soda or vinegar—in through the out door. These colon cleansers are used in preparation for tests such as colonoscopy, sigmoidoscopy or a lower gastrointestinal series using barium. They clear the lower portion of the tract for viewing on X-ray or with a scope inserted through the rectum.

Beyond these purposes, the medical justifications for colon cleansing are few. GI specialists will sometimes alter the normal evacuation of bowels with a similar process when a patient has a disorder that prevents the colon from working properly, such as conditions resulting in impaired nerve function.

Reality%20Check

There are better ways to cope with constipation.

To relieve constipation with a colon cleanser rather than adjusting one’s diet is a lot like the tail wagging the dog. According to Dr. Nagle, the main reason Americans become constipated is that we don’t eat enough fiber or drink enough water. A healthy change in diet will, in time, make you regular and eliminate the need for relief by enema or laxative. Flushing your lower bowel with a blast of solution can induce movement, but wouldn’t you rather just add a bran muffin to your daily breakfast?

Reality%20Check
Herbal remedies used to evacuate the colon can do more harm than good.

While several herbal remedies can be healthy (or at the very least, harmless) when used as advised, be wary of the repeated use of natural laxatives. “This is one of my personal bugaboos,” says Dr. Nagle. “Patients come in all the time saying they were constipated and used something ‘natural’ they bought at the health food store. What they’ve usually taken is a form of senna, which is a stimulant laxative. Over time, your bowel becomes addicted to the senna—and you require higher and higher doses of it. With long-term use, some stimulant laxatives destroy the nerves that naturally stimulate the bowels.”

I did dr natura back in feb for 1 month & for my first time back in Jan 2006 (3 mo cleansing). Loved the results, made my stomach flatter + made me regular. Eventhough I ate recomended fruit&veggie needs for 25g of fiber, would only have a bm twice a month; now I do the doo every day (tmi???)
