It nourishes the hair and scalp.
It has many healing and other beneficial properties that help the health of hair and scalp but it doesn't impart moisture, though it softens.

If you have porous hair, forget about it to seal. But if you have fine hair with closed cuticles, sure it can 'seal' for several days. I suggested that my sister use only liquids and spritz to moisturize and soften her hair, as her strands are super fine and easily weighed down. Any bit of oil makes her hair stringy and limp. I'm the opposite.

So how would you ladies recommend we use coconut oil? In what part of our regimen? Because what I'm getting from this thread is that it's pretty much useless.

Coconut oil is definitely not useless.

Start with these two articles from The Natural Haven.

Coconut oil is very useful depending on your hair needs.

1. It does penetrate the hair but this does not stop it from coating the outside of the cuticle which it does. The amount of oil that can enter the hair is limited, so naturally most of the oil will sit on the surface.

Thanks. I got this from the first link. I was wondering what the oil penetrating the shaft had to do with its ability to seal. This makes more sense.

Another thing I don't understand about moisturizing and sealing: It is said that you have to moisturize your hair before sealing in the moisture. Oil alone cannot moisturize but it can seal in moisture, correct? But you have to moisturize first because otherwise the oil will seal out the moisture and make your hair dry, correct? If that's the case, then why do we have to moisturize every day? What happened to the moisture I put in yesterday that was supposedly sealed in? If my hair still has the oil on it, then how will the moisture get to it today? Wouldn't that just be putting moisture on top of oil? Moisture that will not penetrate the cuticle but will only evaporate into the air?

not everyone has to moisturize and seal daily. you do what works for your hair not someone elses.
