I would toss it.  I don't bother trying to make oils work if it smells off.

That's because it gets rancid after a while.

Hi there,

I'm so glad you posted this question!!! I have the same problem. I used some organic extra virgin coconut oil in my hair and initially it was a very light pleasant smell. Then perhaps a day or two later it starting smelling very weird Shocked and I couldn't figure out what my hair smelled like. Then my husband who has this strange desire to just smell my hair noticed it also, and later that night after we went to bed, he finally figured out what it smelled like....baby vomit!!! Dead I couldn't wait for that smell to go away. Not to mention it made my hair TERRIBLY oily. I didn't throw the coconut oil away because it was still very fresh and it can be good for cooking. I instead use it to make my stove top popcorn. It is very delicious. Just sprinkle a little salt and you have a healthy, tasty snack.Smile

The same happens to us. Doesn't matter how little I use. We can only use it as a pre-poo at our house

IMO, coconut oil & perspiration do not mix at all. Also, I think that regular bacteria starts to break it down after it comes in contact with sweat and that is where that foul odor begins.

i use coconut oil primarily as a prepoo, but when i put it on my styled hair, i wash it out 1-2 days later b4 it goes from nice to nasty...when i am exercising regularly, i wash my hair daily and that prevents that coconut oil break down odor issue.

I agree that it smells like baby vomit/spoiled milk if you dont wash it out after around 2 days.
