*There is one correct way to close a credit card without damaging your credit:
Write a letter to the credit card company to formally close it and use the following wording prominently in the letter: CLOSED AT CUSTOMER'S REQUEST.

*Your 1st credit card is the most important because it is good to show a long, stable credit history without late payments etc, but if you need to close the card without a problem, use those words boldly in the letter. When you get your credit report, the card will show up as closed at your request.

I'm weary about the whole paying cards off and not using them because I had a chase card closed because I paid it off and didn't use it. I did not tell them to close it.
