Not only did he have an affair, he was very indiscreet. He showed extremely poor judgement.

If he doesn't know not to run his mouth and leaks pillow confessions and she turns out to be a spy, sure. But was this the case? Which by the way, he shouldn't be doing even with his wife. But this whole business about morality is laughable considering the job he holds. There's nothing moral about being the head of the CIA. Some might see it's necessary, as all countries need to protect their interests on the world stage, but less face it, these dudes are involved in some grimy shyt, justified or not.
This whole hypocritical morality stance is very american. In plenty of european countries, an insipid story about a premarital affair would induce nothing more than a shrug.

I'm not concerned with morality in this issue.  My concern is discretion.  He put himself on a situation to be vulnerable.  He pursued the woman by e-mail after she dumped him.  I am sure the head of MI5 and other agencies have had affairs, we haven't heard about them because they haven't behaved like love-struck teens.  The other illicit things are a part of his job and cannot be used for blackmailing purposes.  A sloppily handled affair, on the other hand, can be used to blackmail.

I understand part of the point you're trying to make. She could have been a security leak if he went on and spilled sensitive information after that cigarette. But what is the difference between him and some high ranking MI5 official having an extramarital affair? Is it just the fact that he actually fell for her and tried to convince her to come back or just the mere fact that he was not discreet with his dirt? I'm thinking as long as he didn't put secrets out there that needed to stay locked in a vault, so what if he acts a like a love stricken, puzzy whipped fool? That's his personal life. But again, I do get the point that she may have reeled him in with intentions contrary to national security initiatives. I just don't think that's the case here. Seems more like they want to make it a morality thing.

I bought she was being investigated for trying to improperly access his email. Is she writing a sequel to her book? This time she should title it "Just the Tip."

That's what I read, too.  She was sending out weird emails to various folks and one of them hipped the FBI about her.  So they investigated her and stumbled on the affair.  Ooops!

I see. That's a different situation, then. Trying to access his private e-mail that could also potentially contain sensitive information and blabbing around is bound to be a problem for anyone, let alone if you're the head of the CIA...

Speculation that it's her husband who wrote this dear abby type of letter to the NY Times Magazine last Summer:

Quote My wife is having an affair with a government executive. His role is to manage a project whose progress is seen worldwide as a demonstration of American leadership. (This might seem hyperbolic, but it is not an exaggeration.) I have met with him on several occasions, and he has been gracious. (I doubt if he is aware of my knowledge.) I have watched the affair intensify over the last year, and I have also benefited from his generosity. He is engaged in work that I am passionate about and is absolutely the right person for the job. I strongly feel that exposing the affair will create a major distraction that would adversely impact the success of an important effort. My issue: Should I acknowledge this affair and finally force closure? Should I suffer in silence for the next year or two for a project I feel must succeed? Should I be “true to my heart” and walk away from the entire miserable situation and put the episode behind me? NAME WITHHELD
