i dont believe in the 10% tithing. i feel like it makes people feel obligated and to me thats not giving cheerfully. i give freely. most times its more than 10%. but i dont put it in those tithing envelopes with my name and all that. i dont want anyone keeping record of what i give but God.

When I attended church, this was one of the things that bothered me...paying the church before taking care of your responsibilities, especially when it came to children.

This is one of the ways black churches completely fail the black community. Most black churches I've seen either had problems paying the bills (because otherwise they wouldn't be so stuck on tithes and 5 different offerings) or were paying those in church leadership wayyyyyy too much.

And on top of the church being a bad financial example, they encouraged ridiculous financial behavior in their members and were not interested in helping them gain any sort of financial education.

No, it is supposed to be 10% before everything because it is supposed to be your "first fruits."

I think just giving what can afford is perfectly fine.

I'm sorry, I'm missing something here...what do these two things have to do with each other? if a parent wants a child to be responsible for their own education...

My mom did both.
When times were hard she didn't tithe.
She said "GOD gave me common sense also"
Ive tithed even when money was tight and ive gotten it back 10 fold. Someone would hand me some money out of nowhere, id find money in an old coat, a check would come that I wasnt expecting, someone would take me out to dinner etc. It's about your faith and what your comfortable with imo I never have any fear about giving my last because I know God will provide, and in all my years I have never been without.

The expectation is that my children earn scholarships just like I did.

ETA: seeing how most companies no longer have pensions and social security will be non existent in the near future, is it realistic for people to put away as much as 40k for education...We're not even talking about multiple children. There is too much free money floating around for smart colored children for my kids not to take advantage of that.
