Hey Ummmok!

I brush him daily Cry. Sometimes I use a lint brush (Stern Smile), but I always use cat brushes. I have one that gets the thick fur underneath, then the Shed Monster, and a regular cat boar bristle that I use for smoothing and comforting. I also wipe him down with a hypoallergenic baby wipe once daily just to remove any 'stuff' that may have gotten on him (lint, hair, dust, etc).

I use this one first:

Followed by the Shed Monster:

Then finally, this (the 'teeth' side first, followed by the bristle side):

He better not have no stinking hair ball unless he has been eating my hair in my sleep (though I now sleep in a bonnet because of him Sleepy).

He does still groom himself a lot, so I'm sure he is getting some hair on that hooked tongue. I just wish the offending item would come up so that I can stop anticipating what it will look like (I've been looking at pics Pinch).

"hairball cats' coughs" can sound different depending on the cat. My boycat does a hairball cough   which sounds like a human mucous cough--not a dry cough but the cough sound when you have mucous buildup (nothing comes up, I guess he's just clearing his throat lol). Girlcat does one infrequently, and it's more of a screeching sound, similar to what you described (nothing comes up).

My backyard/stray cat has another sound that she does for her hairballs which sounds like my girlcat's screech sound but much louder; and she sometimes expels something.
