Topic: Car Shopping Posted: Feb 04 2013 at 9:22am |
Hey Family! I finally got my drivers lisence Friday! YAY!!! Could anyone offer any car shopping advice?
Also, for those that drive, how long did it take before you were comfortable driving? I've been getting lessons so I have never driven anywhere without someone in the passenger side.
Oh are vanity plates played out? I think I want one.

I was already comfortable driving when I got my license...maybe you just haven't driven enough yet.
Anyway, buy a used car from a reliable brand in cash. Don't take out a loan, especially on a new car. As a new driver your insurance is probably going to be expensive. Also, research to find out how much general maintenance (oil changes, brakes, etc) for your car will cost you. Don't go to places like jiffy lube to oil changes.

This. Make sure whatever car you do buy it doesn't end up costing you more getting it fixed than it cost you to buy the car in the first place. Also, if you DO buy a used car have someone who knows cars go with you so they can check the car out and make sure nothing is wrong with it and that you're not buying a lemon.
I was comfortable with driving already when I got my license, mostly because I was forced to learn to drive. My SO would make me drive myself back and forth to school everyday.

I would advise you to try to get a really good used car, and buy it outright, as opposed to going to a dealership. you can get some really good deals and you won't have to deal w/ a car payment.
if you choose to go to a dealership, do it pretty soon, as some places will have some really good deals (doubling your down payment, doubling value of trade in up to xamnt of dollars)
take someone w/ you that is very knowledgeable about cars, and their prices.
research the particular car you want. some cars (like an aveo) are known to have problems w/ transmissions, head gaskets, engine problems, etc. for a first time car owner like you, get a very reliable car. DO REGULAR MAINTENANCE AS WELL. this will only help you in the long run.
good luck!!
