Which carrier was it shipped by? (UPS, USPS/Canada Post, DHL...etc.)
ETA: I know with UPS, if it's shipped standard (ground) you're responsible for the payment of duties, taxes, and brokerage fees.
The cost of the duties and taxes are based on the price of the item and are typically a small amount...the brokerage/clearance fees is where they get you.
Next time, see if you can choose your own broker...it may help cut down on costs.
This. It depends on what shipper you use.
The post office doesn't change brokerage fees, i order hair from the states and products from the UK ( not clothes) and never paid any extra besides shipping. I heard that Fedex doesn't charge either, but don't quote me on that.
I know that DHL and UPS charge Brokerage fees.
