Hmm, the short and ugly phase? If your hair is short and you start to loc it, it will be short for some time, whether or not you consider it short AND ugly is subjective. However, your locs will more than likely go through a rebellious stage where they are doing their own thing. If you are not FULLY ready to embrace EVERY leg of the journey then you might want to reconsider locing at this time. To answer your questions, you can start locs from twists, I started my daughter's locs that way.

yes you can start your locks from two strands.  I spoke with a woman who started hers that way.
Directions:
1. Two strand twist your hair wear it like that for about two weeks
2. Take out the twists ( by hand no combs) and wear the natural coils for about a week to two weeks

Repeat steps 1 & 2 for about 6 months never combing, brushing, WASHING or spliting the individual strands.

The end result the individual strands from your twist will be the locs

This womans locs were the reason i stopped procrastinating and begin locking my hair.

I had a stylist put two strand twists (2STw) into my hair in April and I've just left them in...latching the new growth every so often.  I did the BC the same night as I got the twists so I started with very short hair and it doesn't bother me and I don't consider it ugly...I'm sure you could start with 2STs on longer hair also...just put them in and leave them in or follow the steps that the above poster provided.

You can just do two strand twists and never take them out and they will eventually loc. I don't see why you would take them out that makes no sense and sounds like it would take the hair long to loc. You can twist and then you retwist or latch the new growth every few weeks. For the first few weeks you should wash too often because the twists will unreavel. Of once the start locing up you can wash more often.

I started my locs with 2 strand twists on relatively short hair.  In the summer I either washed it or spritzed my hair with water everyday. After about 3-4 months I started to loose my 2 strand pattern.  Most people will assume that your 2 strand twist are locs anyway.

Hello All,
Yes you can start locks from two strand twists with or without extensions. You don't need to use a product to make them lock, that's something your hair does on its own. If you need something for hold you can use aloe gel. Also you can and should wash your hair while locking. Don't listen to anyone who tells you that you can't.
