or do i need to use straws or fexi rods*. i plan on doing my hair with this method! it's 11 to 13 inches from roots to tips, so i am wondering what method would work, and can this style last a week, if so what would i need to do to maintain it! TIA

You can achieve spiral curls with perm rods. Just make sure you use the right size for the size spiral curls you are trying to achieve.

As far as maintaining on natural hair I am not sure cuz My mom did this on my relaxed hair a few times for like Easter and for me no style lasted long enough.  My mom used the smallest rods to get the small curls i liked and if i wanted the look the next day I would have to apply the rods at night to sleep in or use our smalles curling iron to retouch them up.

My natural hair right now is 8 inches and a look I would have to try for the future.

If there are other ladies who know more please help out cuz now you got me wondering how this look would hold up as far as sleeping at night. I wonder would it be like a twist out/braid out type maintaining?

thanks for the suggestions, i did try this style when my hair was shorter, but now that it's longer, i am thinking i might need a longer rods, the rods that they have are short! this style for me lasted two to three days, it may last longer!

I always use the perm rods for my spiral look.

The key is to make sure you get the right size roller as someone mentioned already, make sure your hair gets totally dry, and I then spray after I have my hair rolled - I will spray in the John Frieda - curl spray (forgot the acutal name).

This style usually lasts me about a week - I just finger out the curls every morning .... and it can last for a week and a half if I pin it up after about a week.

I love this style because it keeps heat off your hair.

I had spirals and I pin curled mine and it lasted a good week.  Now I'm into my 2nd week and the spirals are out but the pin curling still gave it body and and nice curl on the ends...plus they were easy to sleep in.  I used the big bobby pins for magnetic rollers to "pin curl" my hair.  I'm pretty happy with this method and this is the second time I've had my hair pressed in 2 years.

Those look like perm rods and her curls are spirals.  This is from MTV's My Super Sweet Sixteen.  http://www.mtv.com/overdrive/?id=1551169&vid=132105 This is the episode with Easy-E's daughter.
