Topic: Callanetics Anyone? Posted: Jan 17 2012 at 12:08pm |
Sorry in advance, this post is kinda long... So I've been doing a lot of research about Callanetics since I stopped doing pilates for my abs cos it looked like my waist was starting to get wider even though my belly was getting flat and core was really strong. Just google Joseph Pilates and Mari Winsor of ('Winsor Pilates') and look at their bodies especially their midsections, see how wide and 'boxy' looking they are? So I figured out that doing pilates for the stomach area can sometimes be counter-intuitive to achieving a small waist (unless you're lucky enough to have a super tiny waist like Cassey Ho who runs 'Pop Pilates' which I love and still do for my upper body just not my abs anymore) and achieving a curvier shape if that's your goal. ETA: I think that the athletics "wide-waisted" look rather than cinched waist you get from doing pilates is due to the fact that it was invented and routinely practiced by a man.
This brings me to Callanetics. What is it? In Callanetics, you're basically toning your body through small but powerful movements. There's clips on youtube which give you an idea of the moves. The end result should be a toned body with a defined but not bulky waist. There's a lot of info on lhcf and I know that people have achieved good results. I'll post some before and after pics below. But basically what I want to know is are you ladies interested in me making an 'Official Callanetics Thread' where I'll post links/info/pics and you can share your results if you want. I don't want to go through all the effort if nobody's interested! So BHM ladies 'Yay' or 'Nay' to Callanetics?

I was debating starting the ballet barre workout or callanetics. If you get this challenge started, I would definitely like to participate.

Oh man! it looks like he has a wide screen for his waist!
But I think that he had a wider waist to begin with
Some people have wider waist naturally, and sure if you do too much
exercises like that, even if it does not add big muscles, but the effect
you get from core is that your belly button goes in to your spine
with the transverses abdominal,so you will look flat from the side and
wider from the front, but this is not from bulking muscles, this is ONLY
because you learn how to pull your belly button in(straight in only) and
sure you will look square
BUT; if you pull your belly button in AND then UP;so you "lift" up your
whole midsection, then you will look more like an hourglass waist
try it for your self, stand in front the mirror, now pull your belly
button into your spine ONLY straight in,without help lifting it up,you
will notice tat your waist look squar and wider.
then try another way this time, do the same, pull your belly button into
your spine and then up(raise your belly button up to your chest) and
look in the mirror, you will see that your waist is more define with a
smaller shape )(

Very wide indeed, right? When I explained it to my mum she said "do you want to look like Batman?!" lol. You definitely hit the nail on the head and you explained it really well, thanks L.O! When I was doing pilates, I really liked how strong my core felt but my waist was definitely getting wider. I tried the routine you posted and I do see a difference my waist definitely looks like ')(' when I do it. It reminds me of stomach vaccuums which I'll be incorporating into my routine to get a tighter, curvier waist.

HAHA, that is funny "do you want to look like Batman?!"
Yes, it is like the vaccum, and if you can keep your belly button in and UP ,your brain will be familiar to this soo it will be like your natural waay to keep your waist after a while, and this is ssomething they don't do in pilates and core I guesss so they end up looking like wide screens LOL
I am afraid to get a wider waist myself, so therefore I am doing the right thing and I will not do too many planks etc
Good luck dear

I gotta get back to the waost whittler. I think it will really help even out my waist curves & make my left side go in more. My boo & others pointed out to me that when I walk a lean slightly to the right :/ I dnt notice it & most people dnt. My boo says thats why my right side is more curved in b/c I been leaning to that side so my body adapted & memorized it. It is like the waist whittler exercise to me so I gotta try it again consistently mainly to the left & see what happens

Lmao @ batman. heehee
I started doing tae bo again, as well as lifting weights and running. I think callanetics would allow me to lift and tone in the areas that I don't want to bulk up. Starting in February, I am going to incorporate callenetics back into my workout. I need help on my butt and ugly saddlebags. It's just so boringggggggggggggggg!
Hershez, my right side seems more curved in than my left also. I have no idea why and no one sees it but me, but it bothers me. Maybe I need to just concentrate on my left side also. Pls keep updating as you do it.
