California residents or anyone who has been....

I hate Venice Beach because there are always a bunch of PERVS recording girls and taking pics of girls sunbathing. I like to stay in Santa Monica, between towers 30 and 16 because there are life guards there and it has a mix of young people and families, so pervs usually stay away (I think mostly because of families with small kids). Plus you'll be right next to the Santa Monica Pier!
But the Venice Beach boardwalk is kind of fun to walk around. There are some guys claiming they are rappers or what-not and will try to stop you so you can listen to their music. I find annoying, maybe you'll find that cool and even like their stuff.
Manhattan Beach is cleaner but is mostly white. If you'd rather not be around so many white people, stay in Venice/Santa Monica. Those neighborhoods are pricey though, and I can only imagine how much the hotels cost.

It is, though. The only thing that's better up north than it is down here is the public transit system, but that literally is all. Everything you can do in SF you can do in LA, just with more breathing room and less hills.
