yeah I would definitely set up  alerts on the banking website. I have them set for a whole bunch of things.
-debit purchase over any amount (since I never use it if it's used for any amt I know it's not us lol)
-card used out of country
-check over certain amt
-withdrawals over certain amt (chk/svgs)
-atm withdrawal  of any amount
-online transfers over certain amt
and a whole lot of other weird alerts

I don't do one for daily balance thing .

eta: and of course an alert for deposits Big smile

I live way below my means. A lot of people dont get that and ask why I have an ancient cell phone with crazy glue on it, etc, but to live below your means equals having less money for the unnecessary while having more money for necessities like investments/retirement and discretionary income for things that are important to me that add to my quality of life & financial freedom.

I haven't read the thread yet but here's some resources that might help...

Reddit forums with great financial information:
www.reddit.com/r/personalfinance
www.reddit.com/r/frugal

Budgeting platforms:
You Need a Budget
Mint.com

Blogs:
The Simple Dollar
Mr. Money Mustache
http://www.mrmoneymustache.com/2012/04/18/news-flash-your-debt-is-an-emergency/

And basically the way I budget is, if it's not a need then I don't buy it. I only spend on food, shelter, medical care, transportation, debt and saving. Nothing else. It's hard, but that's life. I'd rather have peace of mind and cash.
