Brooklyn Community Board Members Refuse to Name Street After Biggie Smalls

Brooklyn Community Board Members Refuse to Name Street After Biggie Smalls

There are not many rappers who can claim the fame that late rapper Biggie Smalls has even still today. However; rappers can relate to the harsh criticisms that people unfamiliar with his background, give as if no one could hear them.

Community board members have objected to a street corner being named after deceased rapper Biggie Smalls; and on what grounds? Some believe that the rapper was nothing more than a criminal, misοgynist, and shockingly, too fat to be awarded the honor.

One member, Lucy Koteen, said she “looked up the rapper’s history.” She read all that she had learned about him on Tuesday to all the members of the board.

“He started selling drugs at 12, he was a school dropout at 17, he was arrested for drugs and weapons charge, he was arrested for parole violations, he was arrested in North Carolina for crack cocaine, in 1996 he was again arrested for assαult, he had a viοlent deαth and physically the man is not exactly a role model for youth,” she said. ”I don’t see how this guy was a role model and frankly it offends me.”

Ken Lowry, board member and owner of the Brooklyn Heights Cinema said Biggie, whose birth name was Christopher Wallace, referred to women with derogatory names in his music.

The push for the street corner to be named after the Notorious B.I.G. has everything to do with LeRoy McCarthy, 45, who said after the meeting that the rapper’s physical appearance or his deαth should not be held against him.

In response to the complaint about Biggie’s misοgynistic lyrics, McCarthy said, “There are many artists that share stories in a vernacular that their audiences understand. Biggie used the language from the streets he grew up in to convey what he wanted to say.”

Wallace was much more than a fat misοgynist. Raised by a single mother on 226 St. James Place in Clinton Hill, Wallace was able to overcome the struggles of his neighborhood to become an award-winning rapper and icon. His extravagant life came to an abrupt end at the tender age of 24. He was killed in Los Angeles in a drive-by in 1997.

McCarthy is determined to have the street named after his favorite rapper. He has already presented the board with letters of support from local churches, businesses and more than 1,000 signatures showing support for the naming.

The issue has been was tabled by the board’s Transportation and Public Safety Committee. The street’s name cannot be changed without a letter of approval from the city councilman in that district. No such letter has been produced.

I agree with them. I could see if Biggie was a rapper like that other deceased rapper guy... who actually rapped about changing the world and making things better for all black people...

but Biggie just wallowed in his ignorant street life music unapologetically with no concern for the pain of the African American community.
