Yes She Can: Brooklyn Eighth-Grader Publishes Two Novels On Her Own

by Britni Danielle  May 17, 2014
When 13-year-old Angela Content told her mother she was going to write a novel, her mom didn’t take it too seriously. When the teen told her mom she was going to publish the book, her mom brushed it aside as just a dream. But when Angela told her the book was being reviewed by Amazon’s publishing service CreateSpace, Marie Content realized her daughter was serious.

“One day she said: ‘Mommy, my book is going to publish. I already transmitted everything — it’s going to take 24 hours, they’re going to review it. I said, ‘OK,’” Marie Content told CBS New York. “And then the next day, I heard it’s on Amazon. I’m like, ‘Oh my God!’”

Because her mother limits her TV time, Angela fell in love with reading. Her passion for books quickly turned into a desire to write her own. So far, Angela has published two books— Awake and Alive, a sci-fi fantasy tome, and Shattered, a romance novel—with plans to release two more this summer.

Although Angela loves writing and has made a few hundred dollars from her books, she also has a backup plan: become a financial advisor.

In the meantime, all of the profits from her books are going straight into a college fund, and she has some advice for kids looking to follow in her footsteps.

“Continue to follow your dreams,” Angela said. “You’re going to feel great once you actually accomplish what you set your mind to.”

The hardest part is actually completing what you set out to do, so congrats!

I just read the first few pages of 'Awake and Alive'. She clearly understands the conventions of novel writing. Her prose is much better than the fanfiction crap I was writing at her age. I hope from the publicity she can attain an editor though. The opening chapter is in present tense but it reverts to past tense quite a bit and there are some quotation errors. Nothing an editor couldn't fix.

I remember back in 5th grade I entered a short story contest for the local library. I didn't place but it was the first time I'd written a long, substantial work. I was proud of that and it really got me into writing longer and longer works until I was writing novel length stuff in high school.

Self publishing is an even greater motivator for young writers, proving that there is no excuse. If you want to write a novel, go ahead and write a novel.
