Topic: Bored with my natural hair... Posted: Dec 22 2012 at 5:56pm |
I don't know whether to shave off the side of my head that is slowly fading away due to damage from braids (similar to HairCrush aka Chime on Youtube) or to get a texturizer. Out of all my years natural (1.5 transitioning, 1.5 fully natural) I always find a way to get out of wearing my natural hair out. It is fine, coarse, and frizz-city everytime I wear it out. I can't tackle the fact that my hair is so fine with absolutely no definition.... I want dreads but I can not do the commitment so I'm in yarn braids, trying to thicken and protect my hair. I use heat (blow-drying) a lot because my hair air-drying is a TORTURE unless I braid it or band it nightly. I'm tired of that mess!!!! Ugh I know my hair and the products that work but I HATE puffs, braidsouts and twistouts have nooo definition unless I wear scalpy a* braids or twists all week then let it loose.I'm really fed-up. I'm done trying to blend it with weaves as I realize it is just as high maintenance as my natural hair. PLEASE HELP ME BEFORE I CUT ALL MY HAIR OFF AGAIN! or heat damage it, make it more fine or break off, or relax (and btw I hate my straight hair and why I wanted to go natural). I've already tried color too and it resulted in a MAJOR setback. UGHH!!!!

have you tried finger coils? That's what i do with mine when i can't find any other styles. if your hair is long enough to put into updos, you might just wear buns and the like until your hair gets long enough for you to feel like you can wear it down and have it look right

I haven't tried finger coils but I will def. give them a shot for my trip to ATL on the 11th... how do I keep them fresh and moisturized without them becoming frizzy? Shea butter?
I really want to wear my hair in protective styles until I get out of school for the semester (Spring 2013) because I need to get more focused on my grades than my hair maintenance. I tried buns before and I think I will wear them for a while during this "transition" back to healthy and "wearable" hair.
My thing is, if I'm not comfortable with my length by now, when will I ever be? How will I maintain something that I'm never satisfied with? If I'm always protecting it, how will I get used to it?

Shaving/cutting is a good option for a fresh start especially for a dramatic look or if damage is involved. For some it presents unpleasant challenges.

I like the finger coils suggestion.
Personally, at times I become irritated with lengthy styling sessions. I still wear mini braids regularly but this year- I've given myself breaks more often. Occasionally I'll bun. For me the perfect I don't want to be bothered but look semi decent, not neglect my hair for months, or damage my hair is the [old school] basic french braid. So so quick & easy. It is: - A time saver plus I can sleep on it & wake up & shower & go.
- An end protector with no stress on the edges
- exercise friendly style that eliminates worrying about looking ratchet post workout
- professional or casual style depending on clothes or accessories
- A hat friendly style for winter or summer
I need all of that in my life. It is my best lazy girl do w/o damaging my hair. Bonus-I can still henna & protein treat my hair when needed. I also tend to get compliments for this simple style.
To spruce it up - I could reverse back to front w un-braided ends as bangs but I haven't bothered.

Why not try protective styling with wigs and/or half wigs (if thats your style) until school is out and if you're still bored after that then shave a side for a dramtic change. Not touching may give your hair a chance to repair and strengthen I'm bored as well my hair is healthy for the most part I've just been lazy with trying new styles. I plan to bust out with something new lik a nice cut in May when school is over.

thanks ladies... you don't know how much you've truly helped me except what I have on my head and embrace protective styling. I joined a 6 month protective styling challenge so that I can rebuild my hair to its full potential. I then will either cut it or wear it out ... during that 6 months I plan to get some great styles that I can wear on the weekends so that once I gain/retain more length and thickness, I will be satisfied. No cutting for me unless I have another setback during the challenge, which I shouldn't.

Shave one side off, like Cassie. I think that's cute.

when I get bored with my natural hair, I do some of these:
wig it up with a half wig I found that matches my hair well
or
you can try a full wig. wigs are nice because you can still treat your
hair underneath and don't have to have something on your head 24/7. you
can also switch up the wig styles often and experiment. if you care
about others viewing you in so many diff wig styles you can try a
consistent style of wigs.
also, i will try a different braid/twist pattern on my head and make up my own styles.
but
the thing i do most often is wear one of my many cute crochet hats
(with silk scarf underneath). i'll spice it up by leaving out some of my
front to make a big puff bang. sometimes i'll twist up the puff bank to
make twist bangs.
HTH!

thanks for the suggestions ladies... I am going to try only 2 half wigs this semester that both resemble my natural hair with big braids underneath. I hate cornrows because I cant get moisture to my hair like I want to.
I am going to try to get my mom to buy me $50 worth of hair stuff for the semester... I will get a crochet hat (maybe two), a half wig, and some synthetic hair for my buns.
What do you guys think of the braided ponytails? I thought these styles were cute:
any tips on how to recreate these looks?
