i agree, epitome.  i didn't get the hype when i went but i guess it also depends on the night and if that is your scene.  many people seem to like it. i think it would be ok to check out for a person out of town.

but i will say that their food is DELICIOUS the mac & cheese....yum!

Here is a list of a few things. You may just want to check out their sites closer to your visit to see what they have going on since you are coming around the holidays.  Everyone can add or provide some feedback on these places. I haven’t been to all to provide feedback but have heard about them.

Food/Lounge

Bus Boys & Poets (I agree, good choice) they two locations that are cool in DC.- U Street and China town http://www.busboysandpoets.com/

Ben’s Next Door – on Mon/Tues they have live music/spokenword/comedy – U Street corridor www.bensnextdoor.com/

The Howard Theatre – live shows – near HU thehowardtheatre.com/

Indulge – U Street - http://www.induljdc.com/

Oya – good happy hour – near chinatown

Coco Sala - www.cocosala.com/

Clubs

Bar 7 – more of a Friday after work.  Kind of narrow not two big, but two levels – not too far from Chinatown http://bar7dc.com/home.html

The Park at Fourteenth– I think Thursday and Fridays are the days to go http://www.park14.com

Ibizia -  http://ibizadc.com/

Josephine’s – I heard Wednesdays is the day to go? http://www.josephinedc.com/

Stadium – strip club, Wednesday is ladies night.

Asia Café – restaurant turns into a lounge/club on Saturdays. http://www.cafeasiadc.com/

Patty Boom Boom. Heard it’s a good re e spot but hot and sweaty. http://www.pattyboomboomdc.com

Other places people suggested – Adams Morgan and Georgetown. They have all types of restaurants/little clubs in both locations. In addition to the Chinatown, Cap Hill and U Street spots.

Ultra Lounge  http://www.operadc.com

Shopping

Georgetown  - mix of stores

Near Chinatown – H&M, Zara,  TJ Maxx, Macys

Friendship Heights?  On border of DC/MD has a few stores there. You can google friendship heights stores to see a few. They have a lot of department stores.

Pentagon City in Virginia but literally minutes from DC and is metro accessible.
