Interesting read.  Thanks!  It makes you wonder how different things would have been had the system of indentured servitude, rather than life service, continued.  It was also interesting to read about the mulatto class.  People tend to forget that the one drop rule was not created by blacks who wanted to stay together but by whites who wanted to exclude.

Thanks for this !

My dad side of the family "kept the color" for a long longtime until he married my mom. Plus, she was part Haitian so they just about died.

oh there was a book that touched on this subject by a black author....Another World? A different world? it was critically acclaimed.  the black father was skilled and was able to buy the freedom of his son and his wife...the master had a fondness for the son....the master eventually gifted the son a slave which pissed the father off...he was like how am i gonna work for your freedom and you're gonna own a slave? wheredeydothatat?!

Some were. But most I think used the opportunity to buy their family. Remember it was dangerous for them too. I read of some who did so and then they all ended up getting kidnapped and sold as slaves even though they were legally free.

If I can find the one slave narrative, there is one with a picture of a man who looks like a tanned white person and then there are 2 kids who look white. The man was a slave and they looked poor as hell.

But that man was considered black.

thanks that makes sense. the sad thing is that we as Blacks still live in the country that enslaved us with little to no acknowledgement.  from sociological stand point how do you find the root of our issues.  I had a deep discussion with an male friend who is from Africa and he says that we should not have stayed here once we were declared free. sigh
