I actually partially agree with what he's saying.

Only partially, African Americans are just as much American as European Descended Americans, so we have every right to say we're just Americans rather than emphasis on the racial part.

At the same time, I totally understand why people do, and that's really not his concern as to why. Unless he's just sincerely curious and wondering why, which doesn't sound like it.

I'm not American, but I don't call myself African Canadian. I'm just Black, and Canadian. Two separate things to me. I don't let my race interfere with my Nationality.

I consider myself a proud African American. My ancestors were brought here on slave ships. My ancestors marched, protested, were abused and died for the civil rights of blacks in America. My ancestors did too much for me to just call myself American bc it wasnt that long ago for me to just forget.

Also, I go to school with a bunch of Africans that have their citizenship. They call themselves African (Nigerian, South African etc). Ask their race they say Black, ask their ethnicity they say African, ask their culture they will tell u from what tribe. Only and ONLY when you ask nationality will they say American. As well for all the WI people Ive met. They call themselves Jamaican, Haitian, Basian, Trinidadian... even though almost all of them were born here in America and parents might have been born here.

So if your coworker wants to ask people why they call themselves something, he better not just single AAs out.

Thanks, this is pretty much how I wanted to say it. There's just certain things, I try to prevent myself from saying around white people because they're too sensitive. I'm very much into my African roots but when I'm around certain white people, I have to diversify myself into they're ignorant ways and kind of shrug off the subliminal racism.

He doesn't like that I voted for Barack because he's black and yea, I support a decent black president over a crakkker any day, no white man is going to admit that they are ready for a black president, they'll just point out something as infinitesimal as a spec of dust and use that as an excuse for why they will not vote for a negro.

Like Scorpio said, somewhere down the line in your ancestral line an African ancestor fought to get you out of segregation and slavery and not disregard that you have African in you, don't let the white man and his Uncle Tom minion's fool you. This dude said that if I'm African-American, why can't he be European American or German or Irish American, I told him, he could be whatever he wants but I'm African American, I didn't give him an explanation and when it comes to political debates, I just walk away and stick to my democrats.
