-Black -African -American
Black is my race. American is my nationality. African is my heritage/ethnicity (but I usually say Nigerian).
And I don't really use or like the term African American, but I am African as well as an American... but it is commonly used in America (I don't think I've ever directly referred to myself as an African American actually...)

He has me confused! But that's just me though because I would be so sarcastic with him.
If he ask you why do we consider ourseleves African American and why not just say American or Black.
What do he consider Barack Obama?
Black,African American,Or American otherwise why would Barack come up in his conversations?
I'm confused... He racist.

I actually partially agree with what he's saying.
Only partially, African Americans are just as much American as European Descended Americans, so we have every right to say we're just Americans rather than emphasis on the racial part.
At the same time, I totally understand why people do, and that's really not his concern as to why. Unless he's just sincerely curious and wondering why, which doesn't sound like it.
I'm not American, but I don't call myself African Canadian. I'm just Black, and Canadian. Two separate things to me. I don't let my race interfere with my Nationality. |
i feel the same way :| i'm not an american, i just happen to live here -- but i am black. i find the term african-american to obsolete in many ways, though i do understand it's place. i just call black people who were born in the states americans and leave it at that.
i think nationality, ethnicity and race are all different things that sometimes get muddled together.

Honestly I don't understand why he's allowed to have diarrhea of the
mouth talking about a ton of things that are totally inappropriate for
the work place but you have to bite your tongue. A simple "this is an
inappropriate convo for the workplace" is IMO enough to let him know
that you're tired of his ranting - and to let him know he's stepping on
toes unnecessarily. IMO I really don't care. Black, African American, for me personally, it's all the same - I'm more than a checkbox on the census. And for the record, I always check 2 or more races whenever I have to fill out any kind of profile just because I hate those things in general... ETA: ...and because I identify with all of my ancestry. You're co worker should be happy he didn't pull that mess with me, I'd have given him hell for all the "Native Americans" who came before me who "his people" disrespected, and who's culture his ancestors raped and pillaged. I take issue with self righteous racists.
