the biggest issue I have is that the parents thought this was ok. I don't blame the kid b/c he doesn't know.

even though it wasn't done w/ malicious intent, it shouldn't have been done. IMO there is too much hurtful history behind black face for it to even be done in jest. why not have the kid wear a damn jersey like everyone else.

the parents are probably only apologizing b/c there was a backlash, and not that the action was done in the first place

I'm torn...you have the supposed innocence of a young child, but then you have the racial history and significance on why this would be seen as wrong.

I think his parents should have told him to do the mohawk, but no black makeup. The athlete would have still appreciated his enthusiasm and admiration.
