My sis wants to plan a birthday surprise party for her man in January, he will be 34. She wants me to help her plan it.  So far we decided it will be in a small banquet hall that can accommodate up to 80pl.
 
Any ideas/tips on themes, decorating etc?  the overall flow-should it be buffet style or have servers?
 
Have you been to parties for somone 30 or over what was it like??

For themes we would need a little info on the guy,his interest,favorite colors,foods,etc

Buffet style is alot easier on the pockets,and you can have a cash bar.
Get your supplies from Sam's,BJ's,or Walmart.
Try to save money by checking different halls,sometimes your local fire station will rent the space to you for less than $2000..

i wouldn't do a theme since its not a milestone birthday. I would just rent a room at a really nice upscale restaurant or on a roof of a hotel. 

especially if he's a simple guy no the "party" type. i planned my ex's 30th party...went all out and he liked it but it really wasn't his personality. 

For my dad's 60th birthday party we rented the top level of a restaurant and they let us do the table settings with no additional charge. His was  golf theme and it came out really nice.

How about an 80's themed party.
That way it can be as laid back as he seems.
 
Can have 3 food stations all 80's themed: gourmet pizza, bag lunch special and tv dinner.
Candy station which includes pop rocks, ring pop etc
Dessert station with fondue and cupcakes
Game station with the Atari set you get from walmart and bean bags
Poker station
Jello jigglers (jello shots)
You can have an old school rap battle...
