Asked have I ever smoked weed at interview

I had an interview months ago.  It wasn't a job that required a clearance but they do an extra thorough background check. 

They asked a lot of questions that kind of judge your character.    They let give you a small test where they leave the room and you have to answer several essay questions.  Some of them where hard .  I had my cell phone and was about to cheat and look up a couple of answers.  But something told me not to do that.  I was looking up as I was thinking of an answer and I noticed a video cam in the wall.  LOL.  I was like..okay they are really trying to see if you would cheat.

So the guy comes back in an start asking me questions.  I think there was about 30 of them. Do I drink?  Have I ever been locked up? Do I have any family incarcerated.  Have you ever smoked weed? 

I don't know why I lied but I said no.   I don't smoke weed, but I have tried it when I was a teen.
I know I should I have said yes and just explained myself. 

I just wanted to know, how you would answer this question?  And has anyone ever said yes to a question like this and still got hired.

Never been asked anything like that

that question is common in some fields, especially federal jobs. a lot of people i know have said no. only one friend that i know of said yes, but told them it was a long time ago and she was still offered the job. i wouldn't sweat it unless you are currently partaking. you know some test are done by a hair test versus urine test.

Did u get  the job?

I've heard of enlisted folk answering 'yes' when asked if they've done drugs at recruiting stations. They have to explain the circumstances and depending on what they were, they can still get accepted.

Anonymous ex and current govt sources say if there is no proof of said drug use (arrests, pissin' hot, etc), don't mention it.
