I ditch the comb during the warmer weather when I practice the curly girl method. But I used a comb periodically during the winter.

So it's nearly been a month and I can say it's been a pleasant experience without a comb except for last week when I needed to part my hair. I guess the only times I really need to use a comb is when my hair gets really matted which is not as much these days or cowashing.

I did for about 2 months. I noticed less hair coming out but I think that's because I wasn't managing to get out all the shed hair. I just started using a wide-tooth comb last week and I'll see how it goes.

I did expect to 'lose' more hair but it was still a shock to actually see it. It was about 3x as much as when I finger comb. However, this week it was only 2x as much. I don't know if I will continue combing regularly or switching between combing and finger combing.

BTW I found using my fingers fine for detangling and after a while didn't experience any serious tangles. And there were no tangles when I began combing. So I still detangle with my fingers.

And FYI I am natural, type 4, thin strands, low density and I unbraid, wash and braid once a week (so no matting) in 7 - 8 plaits, which I wear under my wig. I detangle with an oil mix as I unbraid each plait. I comb / finger comb with Aussie moist and an oil mix.

I only use the magic star jumbo rake (when i have conditioner in) to detangle.  I have seen much less breakage.

I quickly finger detangle (I put condish on dry hair) than I wash &  DC (or cowash)..with the condish in i use the rake than rinse.  After that style.

I used my modified Denman last week just bc I hadn't brushed or combed in months. Maaaaaaan sooooo much hair came out. I will never run a comb/brush through my strands unless absolutely necessary.
