My protective/low manipulation hairstyles keep my hair stretched. Finger detangling never takes more that 30 mins.

My hair is almost apl and is 4a/4b

my hair is always stretched - i am almost always in twists (small or mini).  when i am not in those, i am in medium size twists or buns.

i do the same technique as amber, which is why it takes such a long time - but i get out all of the shed hairs.  when i finger detangle w/out conditioner (with just an oil, for example) and then finger comb/rake when i condition my hair, then it's much faster, but i do not get out all of my shed hair that way.

finger detangling has helped to clump my hair far better than a wide tooth comb.  my clumped kinks and coils are actually visible now when my hair is dry.

I think I'll try this no comb completely method for next month since my hair regimen is in need of a reboot and not retaining to my knowledge at the moment. Will report if the thread is still in heavy rotation.

Heavy Rotation's Reggie of still implementing a wide toothed comb 1x a month is a good idea.
I think I'll follow that when my hair grows out more.

I am a 4a/b and for the time that I have been natural, I have never combed my hair (only finger detangle) and with the aid of using a strictly ayurvedic/indian herbal regimen and oils I never have any tangle problems.

i don't know, ladies.

i had my hair in 4 cornrows for the last 6 weeks.  i decided to spritz and detangle.  the finger detangling came first, but i still had some matte-balls or areas of "build-up"?  that needed the help of a wide tooth comb to "clear out" shed hair.

is there such a thing as "matte-balls"?

I ditch the comb during the warmer weather when I practice the curly girl method. But I used a comb periodically during the winter.
