Hey ladies.

I want to try to start learning to swim. I go to a majorly white school and I want to debunk that myth that black people, especially black GIRLS, are scared of the water.

I LOVE the water. My issue is I'm not a good swimmer because I've never been taught. I'm a little scared to breathe underwater so I can't swim underwater ... I can't really explain what is is I do but I'm able to swim without my head going underwater. Which looks absolutely stupid because I want to be able to swim properly and fast.

I start my swimming lessons this month hopefully. Any tips for when it comes to breathing underwater? Like any breathing techniques I should try to start doing above the water before I start the lessons? Are nose plugs effective?

I didn't learn to swim until I was 16.  It's different when you're older but it's such a great thing to conquer.  I whole part of life and leisure opens up to you.

first off, good for you learning to swim!  Clap  It's great exercise and burns tons of calories!!

second -- NO human can breath underwater!  You got gills like a fish girlfriend???  LOL

don't worry about nose plugs - you don't need em.  A little water in your nose won't kill ya

worst thing you can do in the pool is to panic.  Learn how to tread water and then you can always have a fall back to where you know you ain't sinking.  Then relax and stick to the technique.  It won't take long at all to learn - it's easy
