Hi ladies, i was just wondering if any of you have had success with a curly perm? As a few ladies on here have said they suffered from bad shedding, damage and breakage, so i just wanted to hear some success stories, how long have you had your perm and also which type of perm you are using? Any other information would be great Smile

I've had nothing but success with my Gina Curl, if you read my post through the curly perm thread, I post so much to show others that you can have a curly perm without the damage that comes from DOUBLE processing the hair with normal curly perms that need to be put to rest. The shedding and the breakage is coming from double processing your hair with two chemicals.

I was natural 19 years basically before my gina curl (I just turned 21 last month) and so far have only had ONE touch up, a whole year and a few months after getting my first gina curl on fully natural, unprocessed hair. My natural texture is 4B with a ton of shrinkage, which is the main reason for me getting the gina curl.

This is Gina's youtube page, she mostly does thermal reconditioning, which she is known for by many for being one if not the only stylist in the US that does it on highly textured hair found on most black women.

And here are the videos of her gina curl done on clients, her own daughter (with the red hair), and myself =)

Here is the video of when I first got it done...
My hair about about NL after a major trim by a stylist friend before getting this done.

And here is my first and so far only touch up after a year and a few months.

My hair is a little past CBL now, and by my next touch up should be APL in the back (the front of my hair seems to grow very slowly.)

Overall I really like the gina curl, the best aspect in my opinion is that while the hair takes on the shape of the rod the actual texture of my hair seems to remain in tact. I'm not sure how to explain it....I'll use pictures....

My 4B tightly coiled fluffy hair didn't turn into this with the gina curl, and would only turn into this with a typical curly perm.

(which is would have to be chemically straightened first, and then set on rods with more chemical applied..)

Instead the texture of my hair remains the same, only with a looser pattern, and less shrinkage of course. And looks more like this on a good day with the right product.

Without product I think it resembles Bre from ANTM's natural hair, coarse, frizzier, undefined curls instead of coarse more defined curls with product. Both look very natural with my edges which I leave unprocessed and blend with my new growth easily. =)

Here is what Gina has wrote about the gina curl. (second to last paragraph)

I've noticed many ladies with the typical curly perms seem like they are confined to certain products and such - I've used salon brands like Joico, to now more natural brands like shea moisture, and AO, etc. I basically stick to the many of the same natural products most natural haired woman use, I don't do watery curl activators or anyhting like that. I use gels, custards or pomades for definition depending of the amount of hold I need for a style.

If you have any questions feel free to ask me :D

Hi! I consider my curly perm successful. I used the wave nouveau  and its been going great even though I've only had it for 11 months. I do have shedding but it seems pretty normal to me.

Hi,
I would say I had success with a curly perm, I don't experience a lot of shedding and my hair is in the best shape it's ever been.
2 years ago I decided to stop using relaxers, they didn't really like my scalp, each time I got my hair retouched I would end up with a crusty scalp no matter what I did or how mild it was and on top of that my hair at the back would not grow, overall they were not suitable for my hair.
I then waited 8 months after I had stopped using relaxers then I cut my hair, it was very short but there was a bit of new growth from being chemically free for 8 months. I then got my first curly perm ever, I was pleased with the results and what I love about it it's so easy to manage and it grows well and have no problems with growth at the back which is what I was concerned about.

Can any of you ladies give tips on how you were maintaining you curly perm?
I currently have one and at the beginning it was beyond what i thought it would turn out to be mainly because my hair was very thick and healthy at the time I had minimal shedding and everything was going great but down the line my hair started to thin out and I blamed the perm itself just to find out that it was my own fault by the way I was maintaining it.
My don'ts
Don't brush the hair wet/dry period. (Not even with a denman)
Don't use mousse its basically a whole bunch of alcohol with air.
Try to not comb your hair dry instead comb it under running water with conditioner and a wide tooth comb
Don't wet it all the time (If you have a dry curl)
Don't skip moisturizing the base of a good hair moisturizing spritz in my opinion must contain water & Glycerine.

Anyways my hair is really thin at the ends but i'm due to retouch anyways my hair has broken on alot of spots and because of my genetics my hair is super thick so the new growth is hard to hide even if i wanted i'm trying to go back to healthy hair my hair still breaks here and there any advice ? I do an egg protein treatment once a week and a moisturizing treatment 2 with black tea rinses

Thank you :)
Well I get the perm done at the salon, yes the woman uses all three steps for WN but I use Sof n free curl activator or a mixture of vegetable glycerin and water as activators instead WN moisturizing finishing lotion as doesn't really moisturize my hair as much.

Is curl free similar to WN?
