No dreads allowed! Woman may be fired for hairstyle

No dreads allowed! Woman may be fired for hairstyle

Ashley Davis has a tough decision to make: Keep her dreadlocks or keep her job.

That might not seem like too difficult a decision to make, especially in this job market, but the 24-year-old secretary says her hairstyle is part of her identity, family and culture. What it's not, however, is allowed under her employer's new appearance policy.

Davis, who has worn her hair in dreadlocks for 10 years, says she began working at Tower Loan in St. Peter's, Missouri, a few months ago, and her hair was not an issue. But four weeks ago, new rules went into effect that banned the look.

"I've only been there for two months and they came up with a policy. I feel like it's degrading," Davis tells HLN affiliate KTVI. "My hair is a part of me and it makes me the professional and bubbly person I am."

But while Davis may feel she's been singled out, it should be noted the policy also includes bans on unnatural hair color and even chops out a number of other hairstyles -- including mullets, so there's something pretty much everyone can agree on.

Davis says she's hoping Tower Loan reconsiders the restrictions. In a statement obtained by KTVI, the company's director of compliance says, "Tower Loan does not comment on individual personnel matters. However, Tower has an appearance policy that is clearly defined in its training manual. Tower believes a professional appearance is necessary for the success of the company."

Davis has until Friday to make a decision, but it sounds like she's already made up her mind, telling KTVI, "As far as cutting it goes, no way. It's like cutting me open. I can't do it."

They already hired her with the dreads, if it was against policy she would have never been hired.
