Hell, there are musical legends who wouldn't have a chance in hell if they were born in this generation. How do you classify Prince's style for example? Had he showed up on American idol, I wonder what they would have told him

@Jolie, i agree...but she doesn't really have time to do much exploring. If she shows up in Hollywood, distancing herself from country and it works for her voice then she will be fine. If it doesn't work she will sound like someone who always picks the wrong song...and they love saying that.

I suppose you can see it that way, given how the industry works nowadays. But I guess that's where artistic courage comes in... If it's about making it at any price rather than taking pride in your art, I guess she needs to let herself be molded. I just think it's sad and it stunts music. This is a bad era for singers, imo

AI is looking for someone they can package and make money off of.
Prince is a different kind of artist. They probably would have turned him away, but then again, he is not what they are looking for.

Again, this is why the show is lagging behind. Their formula is getting old. They would have turned away just about anyone that had some real significance in the music world for the past five decades... At least The Voice gives aspiring artists the chance to be heard before going into packaging overdrive. This show has run its course

But Idol winners are still finding more success than voice winners...Javier Colon dropped an album that did nothing and left Universal within a year. Philip Philips has a hit right now.
