A style that is yet to get some play, maybe? How do you know if country soul can even be if you stifle someone who is trying to attempt it from the get go?

she must have meant Southern Soul which are those old soul singers who happen to be country...otis redding, sam cooke, etc? She does not have a soulful voice to me. if she took the soul approach she would fail miserably.

she's not the first. it doesn't work for her though. Leanne Rimes has a more soulful voice than her.
eta: Jolie, you've never heard country singers who are soul music crossovers?

well now she has a platform to introduce it to the world. she should have sung an original country soul song tbh.

After watching the clip again, I think all the judges had good intentions
Randy said "Your voice naturally lends itself to country. I can see you doing country more than anything". That was true Mariah asked "Do you love it. Is it your passion" Keith asked her "What do you love about it"
I can see how they would want to save her time if she didn't like singing country b/c she doesn't like it when in reality there really is no other genre for her to be categorized as.
Interesting debate... still think it was a lil too much too soon

Fortunately, the music was so hot, it didn't need celebrity co-signs to thrive. The market for it was ready made.

I have. What I'm saying is that from the get go, she was saying this is where her heart was at. That she wanted to infuse a little soul to her country. And then the others jumped on her right away to tell her what she OUGHT to be. It kinda reminds me of Pink's situation, how she ended up switching styles because she wanted to do what felt right to her (mind you, I loved her R&B period and I hear she's trying to get some of that back). These people are telling her right away not to even explore her leanings. That's why everything sounds the same, these days
