Maybe I am overthinking it but wouldn't the end of the year performance would encourage students to learn to follow directions, retain information (they have to learn a song), teaches them coordination, etc.  Besides not everyone is not meant for college and college is not the end all be all.  Plus I feel that parents should continue education at home by reinforcing what the students have learned, and not just limiting it to homework.

I agree with the school.

If the parents want dancing and singing they should put them in a performing arts school.

Art is important to childhood development too.  It has a lot of benefits to students, and it's hard for me to believe that they don't know that as educators.

They know it but just don't care.

I wonder if they're going to take away the kindergartener's crayons, music, paint and other art related equipment because it won't help them achieve lifelong skills?LOL

I didn't know they had those for 5 year olds.

So you don't let your kids (or future ones) participate in special school programs then?

I'm all for academics and give my kids homework on top of their school homework.  I also support their creative abilities and forms of art (music, children's choir) which grows their self esteem and confidence.

Let those kids be kids.
Doing that kind of show can help them discover their talents and improving their skills. If they were in 9th grade, I would understand it, but even then it is something to put in their college application as extracurricular activities.

I love little off beat and off key Kindergarten performances. I agree with whoever said they just didn't want to spend the money. Music was a part of our core curriculum until high school when you chose between music, art and technology.

Um they're 5. Should they been given college level statistics & calculus too? They are KIDS. An annual show will not hurt their learning in school not to mention at all ages but ESPECIALLY at 5 yrs old the parents should be teaching their child in all subjects at home as well.

Man, the arts stay loosing. Thing is, there are infinite studies linking art and cognitive development.

The link between math and music is practically concrete.

I just can't. I think I understand what they are TRYING to say, however based on what they have written they are severely misinformed, and therefore have no business running a school.
