A few biographies of well known African Muslims in world and Islamic history.

Islamic History:

(Bilal was a slave pre-Islam and was emancipated by Abu Bakr (The Prophet Muhammad's closest friend)

Bilal
(born in the 6th/7th century)

Bilal, was a former Abyssinian (Pre-Islam) slave who was freed post Islam and became the Prophet Muhammad's right-hand-man.  Bilal was one of the first people to become Muslim and was tortured because he refused to renounce his faith as a Muslim. He became of the most recognized and respected companions of Muhammad and is the most famous caller to prayer (muizzen) in Islamic history.

The Prophet Muhammad addressed the issue of racism, tribalism, and non-existance superiority of any race to another. An excerpt of the final speech  given by Muhammad in 632 at the top of Mount Arafat.

"All mankind is from Adam and Eve, an Arab has no superiority over a non-Arab nor a non-Arab has any superiority over an Arab; also a white has no superiority over a black, nor a black has any superiority over a white- except by piety and good action. Learn that every Muslim is a brother to every Muslim and that the Muslims constitute one brotherhood. Nothing shall be legitimate to a Muslim, which belongs to a fellow Muslim unless it was given freely and willingly. Do not therefor, do injustice to yourselves." - The Prophet Muhammad

A clip from the movie The Message. This scene shows Bilal calling one of the first athans and the final speech given by Muhammad.

World History: (These two men were Muslims in Africa, and  sold into slavery in colonial America)

Abdur Rahman Ibrahim Sori

(1762-1829)

Abdur Rahman was from  Timbuktu. Timbuktu, along with many parts of West Africa, was a flourishing civilization in Africa, that was Black African and Islamic. He was a Fulani prince, who was sold into slavery and shipped to America. AbdurRahman spoke Arabic and was a student at Timbuktu. Eventually, he was allowed to go back to Africa at the request of the Morrocan Sultan at the them. His name Abdur Rahman, means slave of the Most Merciful in Arabic. Beautiful name.

A Prince Amongst Slaves documents his a part of his life.

"In 1788 a slave-ship set sail from West Africa, its berth laden with a profitable but fragile cargo: hundreds of men, women and children bound in chains and headed for American shores. Eight months later the survivors were sold in Natchez, Mississippi. Among them was the 26-year-old Abdul Rahman Sori, heir to the throne of one of the largest kingdoms in Africa."

Omar ibn Said

(1770-1864)

Said was born in the Muslim country of Senegal to a wealthy family.  In 1807, a year before the Constitution made the international slave trade illegal, he was captured at age 37 and brought to South Carolina to be sold. He remained enslaved until his death in 1864. During his enslavement, Said recorded the entire Qur'an from memory.

When his autobiography, the only American slave narrative known to exist in Arabic, was found, Said has gained national attention.  Many scholars contend Said was a devout Muslim until his death.
