I have ADHD and it has been a severe impairment for me since there was little discussion, much less treatment programs when I was growing up (I'm in my fifties). It's disheartening that it's still taboo because knowing what it is and being treated by a professional have vastly changed my life. Before I just thought that I was bad and couldn't understand why it was so hard for me to learn. |
Pretty much everything Mrs. BB said. I got diagnosed in college after professors noticed I wasn't 'performing to my potential'. It was a major turn around in school after seeing a psychiatrist and psychologist. The frustrating thing is when you finally tell someone about it and their response is 'hey I get distracted sometimes too. I think I might have it too!' Don't, just don't. If you need anymore info, just PM me samone!

How do the professionals help? Awareness, techniques?
Hugs to everyone dealing with LDs... all of you are so capable despite this kind of obstacle

One of my older brothers has dysgraphia and dyscalculia (which we think came from having lead poisoning as a child) and I feel so bad for him at times. He is a smart dude but the "measures of intelligence" that schools use make it difficult for him to excel. When he speaks to you about history or politics, you are mesmerized, but if he wrote down his ideas, you'd be distracted by his grammatical errors and difficult to read handwritting. He would ideally like to be a lawyer and work his way into being a politician but these disabilities make it that much harder. I wish the institutions that be could really accommodate for people with learning disabilities. Its sucks that disabilities can really trap and limit peoples success in the world.
Also, I have come to find that many people do have undiagnosed learning disabilities and don't realize it. People are so quick to call someone stupid or slow, when its really not even the case.

one of my old students' sister has been diagnosed w/ dyscalculia. she's currently trying to raise the funds to send her to a private school. her public school does not have the proper resources to truly help her, and her classroom teacher isn't great either. she's about 9, and since the diagnosis, her self-esteem is slowly climbing. her mother thought she was stupid, and would tell her this all the time. she feels like sh*t now.

I have Dyscalculia (so cruel to give it a difficult to spell name ) I just have to trust people won't cheat me out of my money. I am sure sometimes I don't get the correct change back but what can I do? My husband helps me out. He is always the banker when we play Monopoly ETA: to those of you that know young people with it... on not giving up on them. Public school was horrible for me. HORRIBLE! Dyscalculia was unknown when I was in school so they tried to put me in special ed. Never happened, my mother wouldn't allow it. In the end I went to college and graduated with honors. Never give up is what I say, yeah it might take you longer do to what you want than others but keep going
