What is your position on this? I read in "The Science of Black Hair" that oiling the scalp is bad because it can clog pores and interfere with natural sebum production. Then I just heard someone say the same thing on youtube. The book said the best way to keep your scalp moisturized is to wash it often and keep it clean. But on the other hand I know you can get a dry scalp from washing too much.

I have noticed that some commercial oils and dandruff treatments have caused an ridiculous amount of scaling and flaking so I stopped using them. But it may have been the unnatural ingredients in them that caused this reaction. I recently mixed some castor oil with tea tree oil for my scalp, for controlling flakes and that's when I read that if you must oil your scalp a light oil is best. But then I know lots of ladies use castor oil for thickness so I don't know what to think.

I think it depends on the oil and the person's scalp.

Personally, I really love oiling my scalp with extra virgin olive oil because it can be absorbed into the skin so it doesn't clog pores and it keeps my scalp from drying out during the winter. There's a lot of information available about the benefits of evoo for skin, scalp, hair, etc.

I oil my scalp every night when I moisturize and seal because that's what I need. Some people do it once a week or whatever suits their needs with their choice of oil.

I just don't see anything wrong with applying oil to the scalp, if your scalp cannot make its own oil to stay moist and conditioned and if it is one that can be absorbed and has benefits.

I used to grease my scalp almost everyday growing up and by day 3 it would always start itching. On a whim a year ago, I decided to stop doing it and just left my scalp alone, but I would always still moisturize my hair. Surprisingly, this worked out really well for me and my scalp never has the itchies anymore. I thought that it would start itching like mad as I grew up thinking that greasing had to be done because the scalp was dryer than other parts of the body. I now know that this is not necessarily true. I think, as long as something can go on my face without me breaking out (I am VERY acne prone), then its safe enough to go on my scalp.

I agree with Chacurie, it totally depends on what you use.

If you're using the grease/mineral oil based products that most of us grew up with, then yes - ultimately it's bad for you. I have used castor oil, jojoba, and the growth aid oils like Liquid Gold & Gro Aut Oil, and have had no adverse effects.

Of course, everyone is different, but I think when they reference "greasing your scalp" in relation to AA hair, it's usually referring to the heavier mineral oil/petroleum based products that most AA's use.

ETA: in other words, natural based oils like JBCO, coconut, jojoba, etc are going to be lighter than manufactured products available in the traditional haircare product aisles in a BSS.

Oiling your hair daily helps to  eliminate single strands knots and tangles. It makes the hair more manageable. My hair is tightly coily and there are days in which I am to tired to put my scarf on a night, I have fallen asleep with my twist out uncovered. And the next day I could shake and go and I have no knots or tangles. Now I recommend covering your hair at bedtime but when you hair is well moisturized and lubricated it does not tangle as easily. The frequent oiling has put my hair in this position. I use natural oils, the molecular structure of these oils are simply not big enough to clog our hair follicles. Even mineral oil or grease does not clog your hair follicles, it does not build a barrier on your scalp. Sebum production as with many things slow down as we age so for sure if you are over say 33 I feel this is a good practice to partake in, if your hair is extra dry, gets ssk and tangles easily. When I oil my hair I do apply some to my scalp but my main concentration is on my hair strands. There are also many oil which stimulate your sebum production and when you add massage to it this stimulates it even more. I think it is a plus for most haircare regimens that deal with slow growth, ssk and tangles.
