Narrative that was never inserted in the discussion in the first place. Where is it said that OP tried to parody dress codes and use catchphrases? Reaching,as usual.

So how does one respond to that? Did he know the people he approached?

I've met plenty of  fellow Africans who didn't give a damn that I was also African. What is the proper response? Were they supposed to invite him over for fufu and goat?

Besides, the standard "that's pretty cool." I am not sure what the protocol is.

exactly, but i think the way the op is worded is they were supposed to welcome him with open arms and kill a beast in his honour or something like that.

and that in itself is patronising to assume that its going to be river dances and all that jazz too once you've announced 'mi broda's your aa cousin with 88% masai blood or whatever is here, welcome me brothers'

My co-worker married an African-American and her parents invited her ex Nigerian BF to their engagement party. Talk about awkward.

Jezus. OP had but four lines in the post and you're inferring all of that from the little bit that he said. SMH...
And every day I meet africans here who want to know where I'm from, just going to the supermarket the other day. I don't go around thinking they have some kind of sinister agenda when that happens

When my aunt when natural and dreaded her hair she started to dress like neo soul'esk and  changed her whole home deco as with masks and prints ....she didnt find her africanness via test just the avoidance of perms and peir1... was a  interesting transformation  and a tad comedic

I think for some its about a journey of true identity and for others i think its just a facade of that same journey reflected in things.
