Crazy how this works with customers / clients!  I own an internet business and some of my customers only purchase products below a certain price... while my other customers purchase everything I release.

The ones who only buy the cheaper products are the ones who are the biggest headaches... constantly bothering me with support issues, questions, requests... etc.  Angry

It's kinda weird, but that's how it works... ConfusedLOL

I was actually thinking of this. I told my husband I wanted to drop all dead weights and keep all my great clients. But he then told me that I'll have some rough parents but he thinks I'm the best thing in these babies life right now.
 
Then I pity the kids moreso loathe the parents.
 
But you'd be surprised what they do. The baby will be sick and they will clearly dope them up and drop them off. Once the medicine wears off, I'm calling them to pick baby up because temps flare, snot all over the place. If they don't pick up, I'm bugging the people on the contact list. This will make them seem like good upstanding parents. LOL

I have turned way clients because it the business was not worth it. Sometimes, these clients cost you more money in the long run. If they are not picking there kids up on time, which means that you are incurring overtime expenses, etc. Let them go !

I have parents that have clout and give me referrals or have helped me to receive certain credentials/grants because they know higher ups and they don't ask me to flex, bend or break rules. Hell they even give me an extra tip, bottle of wine or some other gift and talk about how underpaid I am.

it doesn't have to be sneaky... but before I posted I didn't know OP had a daycare business. Those type of businesses are (for the most part) built on word of mouth. So keeping parents happy and talking about you to other parents  in a positive light is always something to think about.

I'm not a business owner but I do know as a customer when an owner throws something my way without me asking for it or for example, gets to know my family and asks how they are doing, etc... I do want to do business with them more

State your policies and procedures from the beginning and be clear throughout the entire process. If you require a deposit, make sure the collect it. If you require a signature make sure to get it, never deviate from your daily practices for one client. It will come back to bite you in the ass.
 
When I take on a client, there are two interviews. One where I meet the parent and child, do a tour, let the child get acclimated to my daycare environment and the like. I give the parent paperwork and they schedule a time to come back IF they are interested. The second interview we go over the COMPLETE contract.
 
I have family in the daycare business and volunteered for my cousin's and if you give a parent an inch, they'll take a football field. I state the policy, send reminders for repeat offenders and enforce it heavily. I've seen instances where one rule was let slide and the parent felt like they were entitled to all.

I work with another local designer here who is always getting emotionally invested with his clients. His business has suffered because of this, he is always discouting his final bills, selling things at cost because the clients are sooo nice. He is super talented and has the cleintele to be make way more than he does but he lets the client in wayy to much at his expense.
 
When you start taking a hit or start reducing your billing because the client is nice then there is a problem.

it doesn't have to be sneaky... but before I posted I didn't know OP had a daycare business. Those type of businesses are (for the most part) built on word of mouth. So keeping parents happy and talking about you to other parents  in a positive light is always something to think about.

but if such a poser has snuck past me...i will usually just distance myself as well.  yet, when around them i will still be very much myself and very cordial, of course.
I'm leery of new friends as well. My husband sometimes think I'm crazy when I say I can sense someone is on some bs. Since I've had my business I've been 100% correct. I had to correct a client with this newfound friend label and correct it to "daycare parent".
 
What I hate is when they ask me for special priviledges and I say no they ask "What's wrong? Everything alright?"
 
This ish irks me. Ususally when they arrive it's small talk, nothing too deep. Now that they see I stand by my policy and wont bend after favors have been asked they don't talk or I have to pry a good morning out of them.
 
I can't do business like this.

1. Does this person have a business? Could you benefit from bartering? 

2. Are they a talker? Meaning is this someone that knows everybody?
