I wouldn't even let my son see the cover for it. I hid the copy I bought (on the side) from the nail shop under the bread bin in the kitchen. No child needs to see/hear that movie written by yt - did she ever pay the blk woman who she stole her life story from? no. didn't think so. 

Yeah I would kick a fuss at the school. A major fuss.

Make very specific alternative suggestions, perhaps a one liner summary to explain each and why

If she doesn't immediately change the selection, take it to streets (school board, Facebook, etc) with other parents, hopefully she has enough sense for it not to have to come to that

That's even WORSE! How do you choose that book at all to teach black kids--unless you are examining the racism of the AUTHOR? I'd write several emails ad take myself to the school to have somebody explain something.
