If the brick isn't crumbling it will work. Just make sure you get the right type of glue or if you think you want to change your mind later then use the method in the first photo.

I would first  (not glue)some plywood to the wall then glue the mirror on the wood.

What makes you think the bricks can't take the weight of the mirror?
Is the brick loose? If so thats an easy fix, just re-fill the cement and use the proper anchor bolts to hold the mirror. 
 
It would be better to spread the load across the wall, than to stress a ceiling, especially if you don't know where the beams in the ceiling are. jmo

Do you think this is a good idea, I have a brick wall that i'd like to utilize but I don't think the wall is stable enough to hold a mirror

So this is what I'm looking to do

I want to suspend the mirror almost flush against the wall over the dresser my ceilings are about 14ft high
