I'm for skipping. I was skipped and my daughter was skipped. It didn't affect me one bit until maybe college when I still didn't know what I wanted to do in life. I wasted 4 years at a private overpriced university and haven't used anything I learned from my major once. good thing I got an academic scholarship or I would be bitter now. I don't know if that could be attributed to being skipped or just my own indecisiveness and fear of not wanting to change my major during my senior year. I skipped a few grades. I was homeschooled for a few years and when I entered school, I was a year/two advanced.

I agree, in most cases.  Some really unsocialized children DO need it because they don't have any home training. 
 
Nothing wrong with skipping grades, but in MOST cases, it all catches up by high school. 
It depends on the maturity level and emotiomal level of the child.

I had the opportunity to skip a grade..but I said nope...parents agreed.

kindergarten is blah IMO. my dad taught me at home until I went to first grade.

I'd always finish my work "too soon" and start talking to the other students out of boredom and the teacher would punish me for it.Ermm In kindergarden they wanted me to skip twice to the 3rd grade. My mom asked if I wanted to and I said no. I was put in a program called Gifted/Quest with other kids ahead of their classmates. They asked me to skip again the next year and I told them no again.

I think parents should at least take into consideration whether or not the child wants to skip.

it's you have to be X age by Y date. fairly arbitrary, and many people get around it by starting in a private school.

I was supposed to skip one grade, but my parents wouldn't let me. I think I was fine in grades K-4 since I was able to go to older grades for reading, but I was pretty bored in 6-12 grade (except for AP calculus Angry).

My brother was supposed to skip two grades, but my parents wouldn't let me. He's a senior in college and is STILL bored. He doesn't get As in school, but that's because "I don't need an A to graduate." Ermm Too smart for his own good. Since at least the 3rd grade, he's been calculating the minimum score required to pass, and STOPS TAKING TESTS when he reaches a passing grade. Like pages of the test won't even be complete because he has a C+ and that's all he needs.

His behind should've been skipped like 10 grades. He's the most social person you'd ever meet, and he would've been fine.

I skipped and I wish my parents would've given more consideration for the social aspect of it. I experienced some issues with some of the students at the original school. When I transferred, no one knew that I was younger until it was time to graduate from grammar school. It didn't pop up again until driver's education and things like that because I simply wasn't eligible at the same time as the other students.

ETA: I wouldn't change it if I could because the truth of the matter was that I wasn't learning in those classes. I just wish that they would've tried to get me more involved in other activities to make up for it. Culturally, my parents weren't concerned with my social life lol.

it's a real gift to be able to finish school so quickly as a way to earn more degrees, masters, phd...

for the rest of us time really isnt on our side (especially as a woman-- if u want to be finished school before starting a fam) so if my kid(s) had that opportunity i would encourage it

My school wanted to skip me past kindergarten and right into first grade. I never even got to go to pre-school like my peers. I went from home right to school. My mom wouldn't budge but my dad was all for it. I did end up getting accepted to GT at the beginning of 3rd grade and remained there until beginning of 7th grade when the program ended..

Im all for it though but I agree about the social aspect. I don't think I would skip my child more than 1 grade though.. My story is similar to Mamii's.

This kid who went to my high school skipped 2 grades. He was the smartest kid in the class, and probably the most liked/popular too. He won every academic award/most likely to succeed/ and some Community Service award.  He was one of those kids that every private school student knew or knew of. He ended up going to a top ivy (although he didn't want to), an that's where he is now. He was also valedictorian and gave a great speech at our graduation. My brother s in 8th grade and shadowed (visited) my old school and told me that since I graduated, a quote from his speech is now like the school motto. 

Anyway, I guess I say all of this to say, that skipping didn't at all hurt him.
Did I mention he's black?Cool

I graduated at fifteen too. My school closed (WILLIAMS PREPCry) so the school i transferred to made me repeat grade four and then i went to grade six i was borreeeeeeddddddddddddddddddddddd in grade four.
 
But Jamaican kids are entering college much older now some evn 19 going 20ShockedShockedShocked because of the change in the Orimary School Exit Examination which places you in high school. The old exam you could take in grade five or grade six so one could skip grade five. Now children must complete grade five and parents tend to hold children back a year or two if they think they arent prepared for the exam.

I skipped kindergarten. Only because I came to the US from Bermuda where the curriculum is different.

I'm all for skipping grades if the child is mature enough. However, that could be conditional. My aunt is an elementary teacher and once told me about a child she had that was extremely smart but easily the silliest kid in the class. When his parents wanted to move him up, she didn't recommend it. Come to find out he was just bored. Nothing was challenging him so he played around a lot.
