I'd only do it if the phone company I have didn't have the phone I wanted. I have in the past but won't do so in the future. I am wising up in me ole age. 

I am also really funny about getting into contracts etc. I have to really think about it before I sign on dotted line. These phone companies are trying to tie people up on 36 month contracts. That makes me break into a sweat.

not yet but my hubby showed me the way and now i'm a believer. my next phone will be paid for in cash. 

if you buy a phone and go with a low cost carrier it pays for itself. the low cost carriers use the same towers as the big 3 so that's not a concern.

so let's say you have to pay $600 that for a phone. that's probably $400 more than you'd pay with a contract. 

wonderful, right?

well I'd save $30 a month by going with a lower cost carrier. $30*24 months =$720 in savings. so i'd rather pay the extra $400 now, not feel tethered and live my life. My money is recouped in a year, or faster if you chose a cheaper phone like the Nexus 4.

I paid for my iPhone in full price . It's harder for Canadians because we don't have good phone companies without contracts ..almost everything is contract based and why would I get into a contract for 3 years stuck and pay more that the retail value of the phone? That's how I usually do it. Especially when I want a phone I can tinker with and rom.

Some ppl like shoes or purses others like mobile tech *shrug

I'm getting the galaxy note 2 off contract in a couple weeks.
I just sell my others on eBay.

I don't think it's worth it either. It's just a phone. Anything with a retail price attached to a lower price I can obtain it for, is only worth that lower price to me. I'd buy it on eBay before I ever spent full price. 400 for a PHONE? I did once... I had some issues with the phone company replacing my damaged phone and using it as my upgrade. Also, I was very pressed.
