For some people it is. I relaxed my hair because I wanted it to be 'manageable'.  I just ended frying it away. When I relaxed, I did not attempt to imitate another race's hair, I just wanted easier to manage/style hair.

I grew my hair in braids to bra strap length and then relaxed and it would break and I would braid up until I liked the length... this cycle continued for years. I have tried literally EVERY relaxer on the market, searching the one that did not fry away my hair. Many would not work, most would burn -  I had an ah ha moment...  Inspired by tumblr, you-tube and the natural section here, I big chopped 6 months ago.

I never 'loved' my hair like I love it now. I am not quite comfortable with the length, but I do love the texture. I am trying natural ingredients and homemade products too.  When I see ladies with natural hair I smile, I stare and I love it. I feel proud. I wouldn't say it is a statement, but there is an aspect of embracing identity and being unique. Some days I feel it is celebration of our beauty.

I went natural because I had a beautiful head of thick bsl hair all the way until sophomore year in high school then relaxers began causing my hair to be extremely thin and causing breakage until I was a thin nl senior year. I went natural since everyone else hair was growing like a weed even those with "nappy" hair. I really was ignorant to the whole natural hair care regimen. I wanted my "nappy" hair to grow too. and I disagree, black mens view of BW hair DO have an effect on how BW view their hair whether they would like to admit it or not....

   Black men have black hair and the issues that come along with it too...Women weren't and still arent the only ones putting chemicals in their hair to look "presentable"...

I'm sure it isn't isolated to my little town either but who knows maybe everybody else everywhere else has no issues whatsoever with their hair.

Just like light skin/dark skin thing etc ... these people have self esteem issues that they mask in their bombardment of insults to other people that make other choices with their hair. Who cares? These folks are petty and judgemental.
 
I wore a TWA for 30 years .. even did a little face modeling for Ebony magazine back in the day. Black folks mainly had a problem with it though - so sad. Then yearsss later I had health problems etc.. which lead to hair problems etc so I started with the lace wigs - indian remy etc. They looked good ... only now I am in kinky curly lace wigs and woooow. I wear a big curly afro and with the new hair products for very curly hair I can manage it nicely.  Yes, does take extra time to manage but it's worth it.. because it looks so GREAT!
 
I get so many compliments from White people actually - Black folks still have a problem with it Confused but it look like the old natural me!!!
 
But .. whether you wear natural, permed, weaves, braids, locs, wigs ... it's a free country and nobody deserves to be beatened up over their hair. Ouch

Honestly I went natural without all the fanfare. I was wearing weaves for the longest time and didn't see the point in relaxing my hair if I wasn't going to wear it out. Eventually, I started wearing my own hair out and that's when I put an emphasis on actually taking care of my hair, etc.

Personally, my hair is not a political statement, or a massive "eff you" to white/mainstream culture. It's hair that I take care of and want to look good whether I wear it straight, curly or am weaved up or have it under the wig.

Guilty . After wearing Weaves on and off for many years , BHM taught me Perms and Weaves where not a good mix in my case lol . I use my pressing comb on my leave out and call it day . *sucks teeth* it seems to me when it comes to black women natural hair, straight hair, weaved  hair, coloured hair is a statement.  What ever a black woman do to their hair.....there is meaning behind it.  To hear alot of folks tell it.  It can't ever be....I just likehow that looks or i'm allergic to perming.
