although some of his points are abstract he is right on several, people need to step up and focus on what matters and not just commit on posts on a forum....we can't cry everytime a child gets killed if we aren't thinking about way to change it before another child is put in the ground...IJS

I don't believe it's as simple as choice. I can have a single drink and stop with no effort. I have tried cigarettes and other things, and wasn't interested after trying it once. I have seen with my own eyes people who can't.
If the brain thinks it needs something it takes those people a lot more effort than others. It's something in their heads that is wired differently.
Others have some other psychological issues and the drug use is a secondary symptom.

As far as drugs being a disease....this is what my mother had to say. These are her exact words from an email she sent me. I saved it just because i'm proud of how far she's come since she's been clean. She's six years clean! WOOT!! anyways....her words..

"I just have to believe that what I learned is that I have an allergy to drugs and alcohol, the rest is easy. If I was allergic to an apple; I would not eat apples! I kinda minamizing because it was a special kind of hell"

for her the disease route never resonated. she said an allergy made more sense for her. She was addicted for over 20 years.
