i do mental health commitments so I see mentally ill people everyday, that's how i start my day off at 8 a.m. hearings erryday..Let me tell you its rough to start your day with some of those cases.. and some will hurt you in extreme cases, especially if they get off them meds.. and begin to be delusional, maybe they hear voices, and you can't reason with that.. but i always try to have compassion with them b/c its a hard life, and I feel for their families very much.. I try to help them, its nothing like seeing a mother that hurting for her child that is suffering with mental illness..

yes my brother was diganosed with scizophrenicina about 9 years ago its been a hard uphill struggle, he is now eating and smoking himself to death and has a very poor quality of life. Part of it is medication realated. The side effects of psycotropic drugs are horrible and in the long run not helpful for long term use. Most people of color suffer from Stockholm Syndrome and BDD (at various levels of course)

They use the same types to treat all of them. So someone labelled with bi polar and someone else scizophrenic can be on the same medicine.

Also, I come from a family where I've seen lives shattered bc someone refuses to take a pill. However, I wouldn't want anyone to force me to take meds ever so I don't agree that there should be laws to mandate it. Y'all have no clue the side effects some of these medicines have. I've been on so many trying to find the right ones for me. I've had everything from constant nausea, feeling of agitation, constantly feeling uncomfortable, lethargic to I'm unable to hold my eyes open, headaches, high blood pressure to I'm about to stroke out and they have to put me on high blood pressure meds, low blood pressure, high colestorol then back to normal when I stop the meds, the sweats, to involuntary body movements.

I only think medicine should be mandatory to bring someone out of a psychotic state but then how do you always tell???? Same. My diagnosis is iffy. They are debating now Btwn bipolar and major depression with psychotic features. Who's knows. Anyway, the way I was diagnosed is I had lost my mind litterally. I was manic as hell in 2011. I barely slept or I was on a crash and I slept all the time. I wasn't able to function in everyday life like I got to the point where I couldn't do my job. Then on other weeks I'd be so efficient that I could do my job and my co-workers together. Well after a lot of that I became psychotic. Like paranoid as fk. I thought ppl were out to get me. I thought I was being followed. I thought my co-workers were harassing me. I ended up in a hospital. So I don't know what my diagnosis really is bc my symptoms kinda cross over. Honestly, I joke and say I'm depressed, bipolar, and scizophrenic bc at different times I was diagnosed with all three depending on my symptoms at the time lol. I'm a crazy chic know this lol. Seriously though the same medicines is used to treat all of them though so I guess it doesn't matter. I ended up loosing my job behind being hospitalized and my life has been pretty sh*tty since I "lost it.". Professionally, because I work in the mental health field, and personally, because I know a few individuals that have a mental illness.

It sounds like the guy in the OP might have something going on mentally but to be honest, more information would be needed to determine if he is mentally ill (specifically what other behaviors does he exhibit that your friend thinks are abnormal. Is he engaging in any behavior(s) that are impairing his functioning. His current psychological state and speech and rationale would also have to be examined)

If your coworker is close to him, or if it's a matter that is very important to her, she might want to see if he can go visit (maybe via family) a professional.

i know it's tragic when people harm others but many of the stronger psych meds have nasty/unpleasant side effects. a lot of times you can end up on a cocktail of pills trying to fix the side effects (and side effects of the pills trying to fix the side effects)

refusing medication isn't always just an outgrowth of the mental illness
also most mentally ill people don't harm others. IMO changing the current laws re:medication would do much more harm than good.

My aunt is. I didn't know she was until when I was 13 and my grandma took me to one of my cousin's house to hang with them and we came home at like 1 in the morning and my aunt attacked my grandma. She had me call 911 to have the ambulance come and get her.

I think mental illness runs in my dad's side of my family since it seems like alot of my younger cousins are on medications for all sorts of problems.

Thanks all. I am by no means close to my colleague (I mean I like her, we lunch together here and there when time permits)but I am really concerned for her. She was scared to go home. I tried reasoning with her that it's been years since she last saw this person and not to think about it, but she is frightened as this person appears to want to harm her. He is also very vocally abusive - he was loudly calling her a b!tch etc. could she report it?

She says he is of absolute normal appearance and to a by-passer, it could look like two lovers fighting, so no one would intervene.

I have a friend from high school whom I believe to be mentally ill. She claims to be depressed, but I seriously think it's much more than that. When she IMs me or speaks over the phone, she hops from one topic to a totally different topic. She speaks really fast and she has this habit of remembering events happening a totally different way from the way they actually happened. I keep getting this feeling that there is something really "off" about her. Now, she sells Avon, but it's almost as if she believes she is running her own business. I have a friend who is bipolar (like Kenya from RHOA)and she used to invite me to her house all the time. The sad part is that on the outside she appeared to have her sh!t together (very attractive, good job, expensive ass clothes), but she was nuttier than a fruitcake.

I try to avoid people like that because you don't know how to react and what to say or how to say it to avoid them from snapping. And quite frankly I am not as sensitive when it comes to mentally ill people (not children) attacking others...

Back in the summer I had a random crackhead/schizophrenic attack me in the street and I had to humble that ass quick. The same niccas that wasn't trying to help me was like "why you punch her, she's mentally ill, blah blah, blah". But not nan one of them tried to help me though, just stood back and laughed smh...

She's probably still roaming the streets right now and not getting any type of help.

I don't know there are mentally ill people all around us. I doubt there are many people that don't know one. Schizophrenia/bi polar/ depression/ psychosis runs in my family. It's just a genetic thing on my moms side. There are lots of schizophrenics in my family spanning a few generations. We are crazy as hell!!!!!! Certified with papers for proof lol. We have everything from the kind that live normal lives, just weird but can take of themselves, the ones you see out on the streets and homeless (eventhough they have somewhere to go lol), the violent like what you speak of, to those like me who take meds everyday college educated professional and if I didn't tell u you'd never know. Really none of my friends or former co-workers know and ppl don't describe me as crazy or weird but I have to take pills.

He could honestly feel like ppl from his past are bad or even out to get him. Real mental illness creates behavior that doesn't make sense. Sounds like something is wrong with him.
