It's sad that so many of us can't find accurate accounts of our genealogy and have to go by hearsay.
I have also seen/read articles that say that getting your DNA tested to see what country in Africa you are descended from is unreliable.
 
Oprah did it a few years ago and some critics said that the info she was given was very inaccurate and was borderline impossible.
 
Slave owners changed slave names on a whim'kept inaccurate records for self serving reasons so that info isn't but so reliable,either.

Funny that you mentioned this because I watched a video not too long ago about blacks not being who they thought they were.  Its on youtube.  They bascially tested a few Blacks who thought they were mixed with Native American and the results showed that they were actually mixed with white lol.  At first I thought "this is b.s."  Until one day my sister was researching our geneology on ancestry.com and found out that one of our grandmothers who my mom always thought was Native American, was actually German lol.  We found the records from when her parents put her on a ship to the U.S. back in late 1800's.

If you are from the Carolinas, it's not an impossible notion. I don't claim it myself, but like most , I've been told it was there. My answer when asked "what are you mixed w/?" would include the ones I know about and I would likely say "I've been told native American but I have never researched it."
 
I thought all Black folks claimed Cherokee. Big smile
 
Are you familiar w/ the Lumbee Indians? They are mixed with Black, usually quite visibly, not just genetically, so their Black descendants are equally mixed with Indian. So some of these ppl claiming it ,are telling the truth, even if they don't know where it is on their family tree.
 
I find it annoying to hear every Black person I've met claim Indian ancestry, but just because they/we can't prove it, doesn't mean it's not there. It's interesting because when a white person claims Italian or whatever, other White folks don't question it.
 
Most Black Americans aren't Blessed/lucky enough to be able to trace their detailed ancestry. Hell, I can't trace my ancestry back to Africa but I claim that without anyone questioning it. LOL
