The Friday 5: This Week’s Fabulous News About Black Women

Babette de Rozières named one of the top chefs in France

It’s been a long week, Clutchettes, but we made it. As we do every Friday, we’re going to take a little time to shine a light on sisters around the globe who are doing some fabulous things.

While the media continues to perpetuate negative images of black women, we’re here to give sisters a shout out for all of the fabulous things we’ve done this week.

So without further adieu, here are 5 fabulous bits of news about black women this week!

Tammy Williams became the first black woman to own a TV/film studio in Georgia.Atlanta has quickly become a hot spot for film and TV studios, but there aren’t many black owned and operated studios. Tammy Williams, owner and founder of Open Rivers Studio in Fayetteville is aiming to change that. Williams recently became the first black women to own and operate a film and post-production studio in Georgia. Her focus? To create positive programming that targets African Americans. {Free Press Release}

Babette de Rozières was recently chosen as one of France’s most favorite on-air chefs.Babette de Rozières, a Parisian with West Indian roots, was recently named the fourth most popular chef in all of France, a country known for its culinary tradition. Owning and operating the wildly popular restaurant La Table de Babette in Paris, she recently opened a new restaurant in Paris called La Case de Babette. Magnifique! {AfroEurope Blog}

Tracey Heggins adds some much-needed color to the Twilight film series. In Breaking Dawn, director Bill Condon wanted to add black women to the cast of the highly popular Twlightfilms, he chose up and coming actress Tracey Heggins. Heggins plays an Amazonian vampire, and hopes her addition to the film will inspire sci-fi directors to cast more black women. She told Sister to Sister: “[Black women] love science fiction. We love fantasy. We love all of these things, so we would like to see our own faces.  We’re sexy. We’re alluring. Bite us! Don’t even think we wouldn’t have been—you would have, in reality, a healthy vampire community of color.” {Sister 2 Sister}

Bishop Ellinah Ntombi Wamukoya to become the first female African Bishop in the Anglican Church on the continent. The Anglican Church is about to make history this weekend when it consecrates the first woman bishop in any of the twelve Anglican provinces in Africa. Bishop Wamukoya was elected last July by clergy and laity in Swaziland. Although the Anglican church in Africa has been ambivalent toward women, the Anglican Church of South Africa has been more progressive. {Religion Dispatches}

‘Some Girls’, a new series featuring a black female teen lead launches in the UK on BBC3.  It’s rare that black women anchor a show, but the Brits recently premiered a teen comedy that centers around a 16-year-old black British girl (Adelayo) and her friends. The show is about a girl “whose ambition is to stay motivated and go to college. She lives with her dad Rob (Colin Salmon) and her stepmother Anna (Dolly Wells), a New Zealander who also happens to be Viva’s sadistic PE teacher. Viva is great friends with Holli (Natasha Jonas) whose entertaining, violent outbursts are legendary. Saz (Mandeep Dhillon) and Amber (Alice Felgate) complete the gang. They talk about everything from history homework to their ambitions in life. They share everything: their clothes, their moods, their secrets and – occasionally – their mothers’ tranquillisers.” Check out the first episode below. {Shadow & Act}
