Cream, although I share a different opinion, I’m like you, people never agree with me in
these types of threads! I think the problem specifically in Chicago have to do with
segregation and concentration of poverty, but other cities may have different problems for their crime issues. There is never going to be a one size fits all approach because every city has a different history and different outside influences at work. there are actually MANY people looking into reducing crime in Chicago specifically. there was one expert on NPR the other day talking about it. He had a lot of good info on what has been done so far and what they've learned from the failures. I am apprehensive that the new idea they have is going to work, but time will tell.

WASHINGTON -- First lady Michelle Obama plans to travel to Chicago this weekend to attend the funeral of 15-year-old Hadiya Pendleton, according to a White House official who asked not to be named.
Pendleton, an honor student and band majorette at King College Prep, was fatally shot last week about a mile from the Obamas’ Kenwood home. She had participated in inaugural festivities near Washington only a few days before her death.
The White House official said that senior adviser Valerie Jarrett and Secretary of Education Arne Duncan will also attend the funeral. Both are Chicagoans. Pendleton was killed Jan. 29 at Harsh Park, becoming the latest symbol of Chicago's gun violence. There is a $40,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest in her death. Community activists had urged the Obamas to come to Chicago to speak out about recent violence. A petition on the White House website had called on the Obamas to attend Pendleton’s funeral. Visitation is scheduled for 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at Calahan Funeral Home at 7030 S. Halsted St. On Saturday, the wake continues at 9 a.m. followed by the funeral at 11 a.m. at Greater Harvest Baptist Church, 5141 S. State St.

I still disagree with cream.
I can't marry the two. Teen pregnancy is decreasing. No assistance will make things worse, not better. Poor people are still fcking in 3rd word countries with no food stamps and welfare. & violence is a problem as well.

I mean there needs to be a welfare reform but, I can't agree with the drug testing because a child shouldn't have to suffer because of their parents wrongdoing.

I'm sure I'm in the minority, (based upon the reactions in the revamping
the Public Assistance programs to include drug testing and limiting the
types of foods that can be bought like WIC does, etc.), that sees a
direct correlation between a system that encourages failure and lack of
self suffiency , which produces young "men" that shoot up parks at 2:20
in the afternoon. I bet that IF he's caught: His
mother has several children, with no fathers in the picture and has
been on Public Assistance as a lifestyle and was in her teens when she
had the 1st. While some of y'all saying "mind your
bidness/worry about how the gubment wasting money/stop thinking you
better than folks/y'all ain't really Black, etc", remember that the
gubment ain't murdering innocent girls with a likely bright future in
parks in the middle of the day. Go to any prison and see who's in there. There WILL be similarities among the majority, esp the Black inmates. I
know that not everyone on Public Assistance abuses it and a lot aren't
"Welfare/Food Stamp/Section 8 Queens. I know plenty of ppl that grew up
in the system and in the hood that are way more successful than me and
broke the cycle. But, the ones that ARE are
producing the majority of the type of human beings,(animals), that are
committing these crimes and it ain't shyt you can tell me that will
change my mind. So when some of y'all jump all
over posters like me that have a diff opinion than the majority when it
comes to those Public Assistance threads and call us Republicans/coons/
and not really being Black, etc please know that there is a thought
process behind it. I don't have a solution, but I can see what the end results are. Threads and news stories like this. |

Generational teen pregnancy ----> generational public assistance dependency----> this generation of "lost" youth----> generational teen pregnancy---> cycle repeats. So what can be done to break that cycle other than make one of those things far less appealing? This teen pregnancy thing didn't become "no big deal" /common place until the 90's. Your azz would've gotten thrown out the house -eta- or that mofo would've had to marry and provide for you and that baby, so you gave more thought to the repercussions. (reminds me of some threads on BHM on what would u do if your teen daughter got pregnant) Many young teens don't panic when they get pregnant nowadays, why? a.Because oft times their mothers (and grandmothers),did the same thing. She's not going to punish her, she's going to throw her a shower and brag about it. b. They will get funding to support the baby. If they have another one, they will get even more. So generation after generation of 14-17 yr olds raising kids, with the mindset, decision making of raising kids being done by KIDS, what do you think the end result would be? Put a bunch of 14-17 yr old boys and girls on an island, come back 50 years later, how do you think the kids there are going to carry themselves? How their decision making skills are? That's what we are seeing now..And the Public Assistance system encourages/perpetuates this. "They" knew what they were doing when it was created. Us killing each other, "they" don't have to bother. "Assistance" my azz.
