15 Favorite Chinese Takeout Recipes to Make at Home

Beef and Broccoli by Table for TwoPin It

As a kid, ordering Chinese takeout was a real treat. We usually ate home-cooked meals every night. Fast forward a few decades later. I moved to New York City, where ordering Chinese food—or any food—became a reflex action. Seriously, how could I cook in a bite-sized kitchen?

At PBS Parents, I was lucky enough to connect with Alice Currah. Through her recipes on this blog, I learned that many popular dishes ordered in Chinese restaurants can easily be recreated at home. It costs less, and it’s healthier.

Our family still eats out—probably more than we should. But, my kids have given homemade Chinese a thumbs up, which inspires me to try more recipes, more often. I hope the incredible collection below inspires you to try too.

I have made most of these and love them.

Homemade is so much better minus, the MSG and Sugars from Restaurants/Take-Out.

Man i miss NY. The were so many chinese food stores that i took for granted i only ordered chicken wings, rice, french fries, and chicken broccoli. Ive been in Florida now for 2 years and have yet to taste any good chinese food. the take out here is a frickin joke. taste horrendous

any whoozes, fortunately there is a huge asian market near me. They have like every asian ingredient from korean to indian. so if i wanted to i could find all of these ingredients. I might try the wonton soup. I had some with take out, was horrible, but i liked the concept of it.

Careful with the wonton soup.  If it's a package, it may have a lot of sodium.

That being said, I've made my own dumplings, fried rice, egg rolls, shrimp and broccoli, etc.  Trying to find a recipe for almond cookies.  If you have one, please share.
