Topic: 13 Y/O and wants a relaxer Posted: Jan 13 2013 at 5:04pm |
When I was younger, my mom always told me I couldn't get a perm because I didn't take care of my hair. I try to do better especially since she only let me start washing my hair myself when I was 12(Not that long ago, IK). She used to have a perm herself and grew it out but I HATE my hair so much and she just keeps telling me to "Embrace the puff" and quite frankly I don't wish to. I have some breakage, not a lot but some. I'm tired of flat ironing my hair, and i dunno whether getting a perm is the best way to go or not. My hair isn't very long, it reaches my shoulders when straightened.
Is a perm the best way to go for me?

Only you can determine what is best for your hair. If you mother is letting you choose whether to get a relaxer or not thats on you. Ive been relaxed and now natural and I have pluses and minuses with both. what is your reason for hating your natural hair?

Honestly, wait till you're like 16 to get it done.
You're 13, and you have a lot of learn about your hair before you put chemicals in it. It's costly, and can cause issues.
Do it for your sweet 16.

Wow you sound much older . Try to stay away from perms until you are older . Flatiron are pressing would be your best option in my op . Check out the tips in the pressing forum .

Just merely a suggestion: why not look into NuNaat Ultra Keratin Touch? It last 30 days and you can get the best of both worlds: curly one day and straighten the next. Again just a suggestion. There is a coupon for 2 dollars off at coupons.com.

I also say wait. You might not like to hear it now but I promise you won't regret the decision. You're lucky to be able to work with natural hair during an era where the world is actually starting to embrace the puff. There are great products for natural hair now. Just try a few out to get a funky look. If you reeeally want it straight, get a brazilian blow out or just get it flat ironed for now. If you can't look after your hair now are you sure you'll be able to look after it relaxed? Check out Nikki Walton of Curly Nikki. She was also restricted from relaxing her hair and hated it at first but ended up loving it.

Oh, and I've had relaxed hair pretty much all my life. It's really high risk stuff. Not as great as it seems. I'm sure you know people with disastrous relaxed hair. One accident is all it'll take for you to have to deal with massive breakage. Won't be fun being bald in high school. Been there, really a downer.
