12 Years A Slave | dir. Steve McQueen
The long-awaited trailer for artist and filmmaker Steve McQueen’s third feature is finally here. 12 Years A Slave is the story of Solomon Northup
who was born free, and who lived with his wife and children in New
York, working as a carpenter and violinist to support them. In 1841 he
was kidnapped and sold into slavery in Louisiana, spending long years in
bondage until he was able to get word to his family in the North. His
account of his time in chains - 12 Years a Slave - became a bestseller.
So what sets 12 Years apart from the handful of “slavery films" released in the US? (1) it’s one of the few films based on an actual slave narrative (2) the incredible cast (below) (2) McQueen’s previous films have been nuanced and meticulously shot treatments of difficult subjects (so probably no Django/Amistad-style melodrama then) (3) it’s set to be one of the very few films about slavery written and directed by a black filmmaker (4) brilliant actor Chiwetel Ejiofor in a leading role!
Due for release on 27 December 2013, the film boasts a star-studded cast with Chiwetel Ejiofor, Lupita Nyong’o, Alfre Woodard, Brad Pitt, Quvenzhané Wallis, Michael Fassbender, Michael K Williams, Adepero Oduye, Paul Giamatti and Benedict Cumberbatch.
well...it has some good actors. i just want other kinds of stories than the slave narrative
